Welcome to our shop in the Kentish village of Sevenoaks Weald
The Weald Community Shop and Cafe was started in July 2017, after the closure of The Old Bakery, the last shop in the village. With a small army of volunteers, we opened every morning, seven days a week. Under current circumstances, we are open every morning, from Monday to Saturday, closing at midday.
The Community Shop had a nomadic existence for its first six weeks; although open seven days a week, we were never very sure whether the Memorial Hall where we spent most of our time, was going to be booked. This would mean upping sticks, loading all of our stock, such as it was back then, into various cars and setting up somewhere else in the village.
All this changed on 11th September 2017, when we took delivery of a 32 foot shipping container, which was to be our home for the foreseeable future. We finally had a dedicated premises for our shop and we kitted it out with shelving and a cold cabinet for milk and other chilled goods. We sectioned part of the space, as a cafe and, as well as tea and coffee, sold loads of cake, thanks to the dedication of many home bakers in the village.
While we were enjoying our first ‘home’, the parish council were working hard to create a permanent shop, to our specification, in a former Methodist Chapel, alongside the village green and in May 2018, we moved there and there we remain.
